Raising a Himalayan in Poonch: local climate
The city sits at about 999 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.
Summer here peaks in June at about 35°C. That is manageable for a Himalayan, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.
Winter nights drop to about 3°C in January. A Himalayan copes well with cold, but a puppy still needs a warm, draught-free bed for its first winter.
There is no long rainy season; what rain there is falls mostly in July.
For a new Himalayan kitten, the easiest months to arrive are March, April, May, September, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
| Month | Jan | Feb | Mar | Apr | May | Jun | Jul | Aug | Sep | Oct | Nov | Dec |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| High °C | 13 | 15 | 20 | 26 | 31 | 35 | 34 | 33 | 31 | 27 | 21 | 16 |
| Low °C | 3 | 4 | 9 | 14 | 18 | 22 | 23 | 22 | 19 | 13 | 8 | 5 |
| Rain mm | 62 | 98 | 98 | 93 | 55 | 67 | 101 | 99 | 49 | 23 | 33 | 30 |
Climate figures: NASA POWER long-term monthly averages for a roughly 50 km area around the city, so rain near hills or the coast can read higher than in the city itself.
